Alex
Davis_
is a distinct voice among today's young film composers.
After earning his B.M. in piano performance from FSU in
2003, Alex moved to Manhattan to study film scoring at New
York University. He went back to Florida after graduation
in 2005, and continues to write for film and television
productions around the country.
Alex's score for director Soojin Hwang’s "Tycho's
Nova" brought the film an award for best music at the 2006
Student Emmys. In late 2005 he worked under composer Pat
Irwin to write and arrange music for “Bam Bam and
Celeste”, an off-beat comedy written by Margaret Cho
and directed by Lorene Machado. He also created an ambient
score for Tristan Higg’s 2005 short, "The Bigger
Picture", a story of an eight-year-old's accidental
encounter with the legacy of the holocaust.
Also in 2005, Alex premiered his music in New York
City’s acclaimed Lincoln Center as part of the
“Toons, Tunes, and Trikfilms” series. Conducted
by Eugene Tzigane, the piece was performed live with Nick
Ordway’s "How Much?”, a film portraying the
interaction between a woman and a street vendor in
Manhattan.
More recently, Alex finished the score for Bryan
Yokomi’s “One of Many”, a film that
depicts one man’s personal struggle to balance
family, love, and loyalty in the midst of the WWII Japanese
Interment Camps [demo]. He also just completed a short set
of large orchestral works for Ryan Causey’s
“Theatre of the Absurd”, a film satirizing the
21st
Century concert-going experience [demo].
Alex also serves as the Coordinator of the Audio Lab and
Recording Studio at the Florida State University Dance
Department, where he creates original compositions for
faculty and student choreographers.
